"Dry eye" is not a single disease but a collection of diseases with one common end point and that is “inadequate protection of the eyes by tears”. The problem is very common and usually chronic ,sometimes leading to significant disability. Dry eye occurs when the tears are not able to form a continuous thin wet film over the eye. One of the reasons is inadequate secretion of tear water.

This can happen due to the destruction of the water secreting glands (Lacrimal gland) in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, lupus etc. It can also happen due to some medicines such as antihypertensive medications, birth control pills, antiallergics, antiglaucoma, antidepressants, old age, OR THE MOST MOST MOST IMPORTANT RAESON IS prolonged use of contact lenses. Another reason of dry eyes is----- Increased loss of tears due to evaporation. There can be other reasons for increased evaporation of tears which include; decreased blinking during computer use, reading and watching TV .

Computer vision Syndrome is a very real problem for many people who spend hours daily in front of a computer screen . The dry eye associated with computer use has become such a common problem that it has been given the name of “Computer Vision Syndrome”.

TREATMENT : Treatment of dry eyes can only start after a thorough evaluation of the severity of the problem, the type of problem and the various other contributing factors. There are various tests for diagnosing dry eyes and grading the severity, none of them are good enough in isolation. A combination of the tests along with a subjective assessment by your eye doctor is required to get a complete picture.

Artificial tear substitutes is the best treatment , sometimes the Punctal closure is another important way to prevent loss of tears .
